Top Things to Know When Buying Your Wedding Dress
Lori Conley, Senior Buyer for David’s Bridal Canada’s Bridal Collections offers some advice on what to look for while shopping for your wedding dress.
Heading into peak wedding season, expect to see a new direction in emerging trends such as delicate sleeves, unique necklines and feminine details with artisan touches such as antique lace and floating floral appliques. On the opposite end of the spectrum, chic and savvy brides may prefer shimmery fabrics and gowns with clean, simple silhouettes.
Sometimes, brides who are petite, tall, or full-figured can have difficulty finding the perfect dress. The selection at David’s Bridal offers a wide variety of silhouettes and our stylists have the expertise help each bride find the right gown to flatter her figure. We have gowns available in sizes ranging from 0-26, and know we can help you find the gown of your dreams.
The dresses at our stores can be tried on and taken home the same day, but if you can’t find exactly what you want, it can be special ordered for you. If your gown needs adjustments, we offer alterations in house to make sure the fit is perfect. Depending on how much work needs to be done to the garment, plan between 2-6 weeks for alterations.
Here are some quick guidelines:
Petite
Empire gowns with a high waist keeps focus on a petite upper frame while the flowing skirt creates a graceful line without being overpowering. Tea length styles that show a hint of leg and a great pair of shoes are also a very modern alternative.
Tall
A sheath gown on a bias-cut in a soft flowing fabric can create curves where they are needed. Alternatively, a ball gown with a full skirt creates symmetry with wider shoulders while a structured bodice accents a trim waist. Extra long lengths are available on some styles in the Canadian David’s Bridal catalogue.
Show off your curves in a sexy corset bodice and flowing pick-up skirt, add a colour sash to a sleek silhouette for a modern chic look, or go for sheer elegance with a gown that boasts brilliant beading and lace. The most important consideration is the fit and construction.
The key to a great fitting gown is also the lingerie you wear under it. Finding the right support and shapewear can make all the difference.
